Finding Balance as a Working Mom: Integrating Faith, Family, and Career

Table of Contents

It is seven o’clock in the morning, and our house is stirring with the pitter-patter of small feet. It’s a blend of sounds and smells as I prepare breakfast, prep and administer all of my son’s medications, and get the kiddos ready for a new day before I begin my work.

I have just enough time to get them settled into their first meal before I have to set up for another workday from home. As a mom who works with a publishing company, runs a business, and homeschools, my days are filled with a unique mix of Zoom meetings, processing orders, structuring lesson plans, and managing a continuous stream of family life demands—all from the same space.

There’s a non-stop tug and pull between my family and work, and truthfully, finding optimal balance often feels like a circus juggling act.

This life can get stressful, but one thing I had to learn over time—which has not always been easy for an innate perfectionist like myself—is that my day and schedule are not going to be perfect, and they don’t have to be.

What matters most is ensuring that I bring faith into every aspect of my day, whether it’s during a Zoom meeting with a publishing client, processing an order for a customer who wants to purchase modest clothing they can confidently wear to work and church, or leading and nurturing my children’s education.

Making sure that I am always keeping myself open to letting God into my life and guiding my steps is absolutely crucial in order to not feel overwhelmed and lost as I try to harmonize family, work, and faith in a way that feels genuine and fulfilling.

Today, I want to explore with you what it truly means to weave faith into our daily roles, what it means to be open to God’s grace throughout the day, and what it means to seek His blessings—big or small—over perfection in every step of the way.

Setting Priorities with Faith as the Foundation

If you’re a working momma, you know that every single day includes numerous decisions that require you to quickly decide where you need to focus your time, attention, and energy. The thing is, being able to set priorities is not just about managing the endless tasks on your to-do list. It’s also about aligning them with your faith and God’s Kingdom standards.

You see, when you put your faith at the center of everything you do, you will inadvertently find clarity in your intentions. You will no longer be simply managing a list of obligations. Instead, you’ll be honoring God’s will in everything you do—from how you live to how you work and how you love.

Your conviction as a mom and as a businesswoman will be unwavering as you walk each day by faith. Here’s an example of what faith-based priority setting looks like:

Start with Prayer:

  • Before your day kicks into high gear, take a moment to pray. Ask God for wisdom and calm. This small habit will remind you to ground each part of your day in Him.

Set Faith-Centered Goals:

  • List goals that align with your values for your family, business, and faith. For example, those values could include being present for your kids, prioritizing ethical business practices, and fostering growth for your whole family.

Midday Check-In:

  • Taking a quick pause halfway through your day will help you realign. Pray or simply take a deep breath to regain focus. Restore the calm in your heart, recenter, and move forward with peace and clarity.

When I set priorities with my faith in Christ as my guiding force, I am always reminded that my worth is not contingent upon whether I get everything done or not, let alone whether it’s executed with perfection. Instead, I’m comforted by the fact that what I set out to do and say is rooted in my commitment to honor God.

I choose to bring patience, compassion, and grace into my every action and words. No, it does not mean I ace it every second of every day. I’m human. I’m flawed. I have my shortcomings just like any other person reading this.

Let’s be real here—I have to catch and check myself from time to time and genuinely repent of any slip-ups I’m guilty of. I promise, you will too, and it’s completely okay. If you slip, simply acknowledge it, readjust your focus, pray for forgiveness, and seek further guidance to help you improve a little more each day.

Carving Out Time for Faith in a Full Day

There is no doubt that trying to find time for faith when I have a home full of work, homeschool, and family responsibilities can often feel impossible. But through plenty of trial and error, I’ve learned that making time for God doesn’t have to be complicated. In the end, it’s all about creating plenty of small, intentional moments to stay connected to Him throughout the day. Let me share with you a few simple ways that I’ve woven faith into my busy schedule:

Morning Devotionals:

  • When I don’t have enough time to do a full chapter Bible study, spending even a few minutes in the morning with one scripture verse or prayer helps me to center my mind and soul before beginning my day.

Prayer Breaks During the Day:

  • There are times I will pause to say a brief prayer. Sometimes it’s after a work call or during a stressful moment while homeschooling. Regardless of when, I take a quick pause to ask for continued strength and guidance so that I may be able to continue giving honor to Him.

Listening to Faith Content:

  • I love listening to worship music. Whether I’m in my car or doing something around the house, worship music is how I go to church in my own private space. To me, it’s just like prayer. It’s how I keep faith at the forefront of my day, even if—and especially if—I’m having a long and stressful day.

Understand that these recommended practices don’t need to be lengthy, formal, or grandiose. They are simple, small moments with the purpose of helping you continuously invite God into daily life and strengthening your relationship with Him.

Involving Your Family in Your Faith Journey

Because I work from home, my family and business are constantly sharing the same space. This does present a fantastic opportunity for me to involve my children in my faith journey. In fact, because they are both still so young, one of our favorite things to do is play worship music and sing together.

My daughter, who is currently six years old, has a children’s Bible that we read from, and the more we learn together, the more curious she becomes and wants to understand further. But even more simple than this are the everyday routines, conversations, and shared moments we have together that are rooted in Kingdom purpose.

If you’re needing a little help to start involving your family in your faith journey, here are some very simple ways that we make faith a part of our family’s daily life:

Family Prayer Time:

You don’t need to have specific times set aside for prayer. But to help you start, you can begin by praying with your family before meals, at bedtime, or in the middle of the day. Praying together helps families stay connected to each other and God.

Short Bible Moments:

There are times when a random conversation turns into a Bible story reference. I’ll share the story or verse with my daughter and use it as a teaching moment. Of course, I keep the floor open for questions and discussion about what it means to her and how she sees it in relation to her everyday life.

Faith-Based Traditions:

You can develop traditions that can range from Sunday worship to weekly family devotionals. Currently, we are unable to attend church in person, as we are isolating ourselves and our son due to his vulnerable state of health. However, it doesn’t mean that we can’t all watch Sunday service and Wednesday Bible study via the livestream options our church provides. These simple practices help us stay focused on what truly matters and connect to each other as followers of Christ.

Incorporating faith into your day doesn’t have to be scheduled or structured. In fact, it’s often in the little moments that we can feel God’s presence the most. The most important thing is sharing those moments with your family and allowing it to become a recurring, daily practice. You will find these small actions quickly turn into some of your favorites as both a mom and a believer.

Seeking God’s Guidance in Business Decisions and Work Challenges

Managing business obligations while running my home and my daughter’s education comes with its own unique challenges. In the toughest of times, I’ve learned that leaning into God’s guidance is invaluable.

There are occasions when certain required decisions feel overwhelming, as multiple different scenarios and outcomes run through my mind. Other times, I find myself feeling unsure of the next step. In times like this, I turn to prayer. I lay all my burdens at His feet, and I ask Him to grant me wisdom to navigate the situation.

I ask for signs. I call on the name of Jesus and ask Him to speak to me. I promise you, this is not some big, grandiose gesture I’m referring to here. Most of the time, it’s a quiet and private beseeching as I sit at my desk, navigating the day-to-day steps of my workday.

At the end of the day, all most of us want is to be able to thrive in both work and family with integrity and grace. If you’re looking for ways to invite God into your business decisions, let me share a few ideas to help you get started:

Prayer for Wisdom in Business:

Before making any major business decision, stop and pause to ask for God’s clarity and discernment. Know that He will guide you and help you approach each decision with calm and peace, but also understand that God works on His own time. You may have a nagging voice in your head urging an immediate answer, filled with impatience and frustration. That’s not God. That’s the world bearing down its pressure on you to operate at lightning speed and make shallow, shortsighted decisions. Focus on God and silence the world. His way will always align you with your greater Kingdom purpose.

Work as Worship:

View your work as a way for you to honor God. This will change everything. Each meeting, email, and decision is an opportunity for you to reflect His love and commitment in everything you do and say. The level of depth and impact you will inherently unleash on all those you interact with will be tenfold what you ever thought possible.

Turning Worries Over to Him:

When stress builds, learn to surrender those worries to God. This is not easy to do at first. If you’re a Type-A “Miss Independent” personality, it’ll take some time for you to learn to let go and give it to God. I promise you, no matter how good you think your solutions sound, they will always be limited and fall short. However, I can assure you that the more you trust Him to handle the outcome, the better the results will get because His wisdom far supersedes our own.

Inviting God into your business and work life will bring you a sense of purpose beyond any task list. It will remind you that your business is not just a job, that you’re not just clocking in and clocking out. Instead, you’ll come to see it as a space to reflect His love, even in the small, everyday decisions.

Embracing Grace Over Perfection

As I balance family, work, and homeschooling, I’ve come to realize that this juggling act often leads to moments where things don’t go as planned. It’s taken me years of internal work, but I’ve learned to let go of the perception of perfection that I once aimed for.

Mostly, I have my son to thank for this.

Little did I know that when he was born, God had a plan to break me of every concept and ideal I had ever imagined for myself, family, and work. With his arrival came many health obstacles.

Over the last three years, I have faced—and just recently dealt with—a multitude of unscheduled interruptions to work and home life due to hospitalizations. And with his lifelong incurable disease, I lost the ability to rely on any level of certainty when it comes to his projected lifespan.

In times like this, I have zero control over how my work schedule is affected. I don’t know whether or not I will be away from home for days or weeks while my son needs inpatient treatment.

It’s safe to say that embracing God’s grace in this situation has saved my sanity on more than one occasion. Grace reminds us that we don’t have to juggle it all flawlessly. It reminds us that we are enough because He is with us, and His awesomeness fills in where we fall short.

This journey has nothing to do with getting everything right. Rather, it’s all about finding peace and a steadfast knowing that God’s love for you and your family is unwavering. Unabashedly lean into His grace over your own expectations.

Breathe. Pray. Trust.

A Prayer for Working Moms Seeking Balance

As we continue to strive to balance our faith, family, and work, I would love to end this week’s article with a prayer to invite God into every part of our lives:

Lord, we thank You for the gift of this life, for the breath You breathe into our lungs every morning. We thank You for this life and all of its unique mix of family, work, and faith.

Help us to keep You at the center of everything we do, say, and think.
Guide us in our work. Nurture our families with love. Grant us the wisdom to balance it all with Your grace.

Forgive us for our shortcomings and failings, and strengthen our conviction to deny our flesh.
We call upon the power of the Holy Spirit to fill us with Your presence.

Fortify Your will in our lives that we may walk through the narrow gate for the rest of our days.
Thank You for being with us, counseling and comforting us, and reminding us that we are never alone.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
